1. What is the difference between School Direct and other training routes?

The Department for Education’s ‘Get Into Teaching’ website allows you to compare training routes: https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/explore-my-options/teacher-training-routes

You need to explore all of your options to ensure you find the course that is right for you. We believe that a School Direct PGCE offers the perfect balance between school-led ‘on the job’ and University-led training.

School Direct courses generally last a year and result in qualified teacher status (QTS) – ours also awards you a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) and Master’s-level credits from Plymouth Marjon University.

You’ll train in at least two good schools, getting the chance to learn ‘on the job’ – but you shouldn’t worry about being thrown in at the deep end. You’ll be part of a team from the very start, receiving intensive support from experienced teachers and mentors. That means you won’t be teaching classes unsupported until the school thinks you’re ready.

The principles of academic rigour on School Direct are the same as on university-led courses, too. You’re also equally eligible to apply for the same financial support, such as student loans. You receive the same support at the University as all other students.

2. What qualifications will I receive?

A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s level credits;

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

3. How many places are available?

We have six places available across the Trust in 2022/23 academic year.

Whilst we will always consider applications from exceptional candidates, we keep our cohorts small to ensure the level of support provided by our course leaders is as high as possible.
4. When can I apply?

The application window for the 2021/22 academic year opens in October 2021. You can apply any time from then until the end of this academic year (July 2022). As applications are processed, interviews may be offered through video links at this current time. As places are accepted, then the course may show as being 'Closed' whilst applicants make final decisions about places. Once all places have been taken, then the course is permanently Closed.

Plymouth Marjon University have published an extensive guide called How to Get into Teaching, it is an excellent resource to help potential trainees secure their place and prepare for life as a trainee teacher. The guide covers everything from choosing a route into teaching, to teacher training personal statements, interviews, applying for your first teaching job, understanding the Early Career Framework and much more. It includes a downloadable teacher training survival guide, written for trainees by trainees.
6. What can I do to prepare for teacher training?

We urge all potential applicants to visit our schools if possible. Any prior school experience enables you to gauge if teaching is the right profession for you.

7. Can I choose which schools to go to for my placements?

We work closely with you to decide the best schools for you to go to – these could be based on where you live, your transport needs and also any particular strengths you wish to share and develop. We will try to give you two completely contrasting schools during the year.

8. What about University based work – what will I be expected to do?

It is compulsory to be at Marjon for the Induction day, ‘taught sessions’ and all conferences, where you will be with all Post Grad students. You will also be able to attend some of their Subject Knowledge days.

Through these University taught sessions and using your experience in school you will be expected to complete four assignments assessed at Masters level. More details are available in the ‘Primary School Direct PGCE with QTS Handbook’.

10. If I am successful when would I start?

Our course runs in line with the Trust academic year, but depending on dates may start earlier to enable our Induction day to take place. School INSET days usually take place at the start of the academic year for in-house staff training and class preparations. Trainees would be expected to attend these days.

There will also be a Celtic Cross Induction day prior to any school-based INSET days, for trainees to meet each other and to meet CCE staff. There is also a University Induction day to attend.

It may be that when you visit the school during the Summer Term after placements are agreed to meet your class teacher and mentor, you may make other arrangements to be in school prior to the September start, for example to work with the class teacher on planning or to arrange the classroom.

Prior to starting the course there are CCE online training requirements and policy reading for example:- ICT; Safeguarding; E-Safety and Whistleblowing.

Marjon also has a suggested reading list with tasks.

11. Will I have access to a laptop?

Yes - if you are successful you will be given a CCE laptop. This will be set up for you to access our SharePoint and Teams platforms where most of our documentation and information is stored. You can also use Teams for virtual calls and meetings.

If you leave CCE after the training year is completed, then the laptop needs to be returned to the school or Unit 15.
